This was taken one afternoon in the summer of 1978. The closure of Pratts in July 1990 was a blow to the High Road from which it never recovered. It was demolished in the early '90"s and replaced by a bland new building containing a Lidl supermarket and Peacocks clothing store, a sign of social change in Streatham?. Ironically, the new building has a rear car-park, something the John Lewis Partnership pushed for without success thus using it as a pretext for closure.The lights seen through the second floor windows are those of the highly popular restaurant where, on Saturdays, the queue would snake down the staircase to the first floor. Before refurbishment in the 1980's an art deco wood panelled lift complete with setting sun stained glass and an operator would creak its way up.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Originally an Anglican church, a Chapel of Ease to St Leonard's (the parish church). It was built around 1897 and closed in 1951. It remained in parish use as the Howland Hall until 1968 and is now an Apostolic Church.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A few of the prosperous Victorian and Edwardian villas lining Streatham Common survive - this one has weathered the intervening years better than most and all its external features are in their original state. It was once the home of George Pratt whose family established the department store in Streatham High Road ([[[726368]]]). Information from Lambeth Council. Dist:0.4km<br/>An impressive Victorian pub - 1882 is given on the half-timbering - which closed in early 2009. An application has been made to convert it into commercial premises with shops above. It is within the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area. The course of Streatham High Road has been a major highway between London and Sussex since Roman times (the foundations of this building reputedly stand on part of the Roman road). Its current appearance is largely attributable to two major spells of development. The first was during the late C19th following the opening of Streatham Hill station in 1856, and the second was after 1911 when the line to Victoria was electrified. Though much-maligned and undoubtedly blighted by heavy traffic, closer examination reveals that the road is lined with a number of interesting buildings, some of which reflect the period between the wars when Streatham was a fashionable centre of entertainment. Some of the buildings have roughcast rendering, pargetted gables, and their original sash windows. Note, too, the canted dormers with their own gables. Originally this small deciduous wood may have been attached to Well House, which was well known as a spa in the early C19th. In fact, the spa may have been in the wood. As a council sign points out, woodland is rare in Lambeth - this patch is easy to miss - and the site is managed by the council.

Dist:0.4km<br/>These days it is really just a distribution centre for local deliveries and won't have even had a whiff of a cow for many years. But there has been a dairy in these parts since the early C19th when the Curtis Brothers delivered milk and mineral waters from the Well House spa.
