Dist:0.5km north<br/>A glance at the map shows nine parallel roads straddling four grid squares here. The roads glory in the names Empress, Mayfair, and Courtland Avenues, followed north-westwards by De Vere, Kensington, Seymour, Sackville, Stanhope and Lennox Gardens. The house building styles are very similar on each road, and the only feature that distinguishes the estate from any other is the comparatively large width of the roads.

Dist:0.6km north<br/>I am standing in the south eastern corner of TQ4286, but apart from the first half of the nearest one, the tower blocks are all in TQ4386. To the far left of the picture, in the distance, is the A406 flyover and the office blocks near Ilford Centre.

The cemetery was opened in 1856 on the site of the former Aldersbrook Farm to provide burial space needed as the cemeteries in the City of London were almost full. The cemetery has seven other listed buildings inside the gates

Dist:0.8km north<br/>Situated in the triangle of land bounded by Wanstead Park Road, Highland Gardens, and Lennox Gardens, this large school serves the Cranbrook area of Ilford. The school was built in 1905. The London Borough of Redbridge is responsible for the school and its website waxes lyrical about it, but, alas as I write, the description contains three elementary spelling and grammar mistakes. I despair...

Dist:0.8km south<br/>This is the Romford Road façade of this ornate building, built at the junction with Rabbits Road. The Library was a Carnegie Library funded by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The use of sandstone infilled with dark brickwork gives the impression of a building more typical of Carnegie Libraries in his native Scotland. The names Milton, Shakespeare, Tennyson and Carlyle are carved in the stonework immediately below the balustrade at roof level, while Dickens and Longfellow appear just below the lower balustrades. Over the main entrance on the left are carved the words "Let there be light", while "Carnegie" and "Library" appear on the main building frontage at the first floor level.

Dist:0.9km east<br/>At the end of Ilford Hill, just before the on-slip onto the nearby A406, is a rather modern-looking set of tower blocks called Caxton Place, overlooking the River Roding, which flows under the road just behind the Caxton Place sign. Dist:0.9km southeast<br/>Flats (or possibly maisonettes) on the east side of Dersingham Avenue, north of its junction with Jack Cornwell Street. (Jack Cornwell was a 16-year-old boy from Manor Park who was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions in staying at his post, although fatally wounded, during the Battle of Jutland in 1916. His grave is here [[108928]])
