Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking east along David Dale Avenue, Stewarton, a street named after David Dale. He was born here in 1739, the son of a local grocer, trained as a weaver in Paisley and in the 1780s, along with Richard Arkwright built the mills in New Lanark [[1536685]]. Here he was soon employing over 2,000 workers, many of them children from workhouses in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Dale's venture was not only a considerable commercial success, it also proved that industry did not necessarily have to be inhuman, that factory labour could go hand in hand with dignity and enlightenment.

Dist:0.4km<br/>New bridge built as part of an upgrade to the Glasgow to Kilmarnock rail line. The original bridge dating back to the original construction of the line collapsed just a few days before it was due to be replaced on 27th January 2010. A freight train carrying fuel derailed and caught fire. There was serious damage to the bridge, embankment and road surface. All has since been reinstated.
