Stanmer House is a Grade I listed mansion, it stands very close to Stanmer village and Church, within the Stanmer Park. Constructed by the French architect Nicholas Dubois in 1722 in a Palladian style for the Pelham family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanmer_House

Would have taken a picture of Stanmer House but its all boarded up undergoing repair. The village of Stanmer contains the aforementioned manor house, the two lodges plus village and farms all within its own parkland. This picture is taken from the road into the village looking east, behind me is the manor house.

The "iron gear wheels and belt transmission date from c1850; the horsewheel was brought from elsewhere and the engine was originally powered by oxen." This is from the listing, some internet sources say it was driven by donkeys. Grade II listed.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This sculpture was created from a fallen tree by a local sculptor, Reece Ingram, in 1991. It stands behind Stanmer House on a grassy hillside called `The Pleasureground'. It is carved from a 163 year old Cedar of Lebanon that fell, not in the hurricane of October 1987, but in the 1989 storm. The tree was originally planted by the Earl of Chichester, who lived at Stanmer House and imported a collection of specimen trees http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__6605_path__0p115p203p821p.aspx

Dist:0.1km<br/>Built between 1722-27 by Nicholas Dubois for the Pelham family on the site of a much older building. A 19th century extension has lost the original symmetry of design. The family retained ownership until 1947 when it passed to Brighton council who now use the house as a museum. Beyond the house is Stanmer Great Wood. The name Stanmer derives from Stoney Mere and some of the area's sarsen stones now line the lane exiting the village, two of which are in the foreground.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Of knapped flint, built 1838 in an Early English Gothic style. It sits in what is now a public park near the big house. It is undedicated and now redundant. Grade II listed.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Viewed from the lower slopes of Richmond Hill. The park was laid out from the 1720s onwards in conjunction with the construction of Stanmer House. Planting continued until about 1800. The park was owned by the Pelham family from 1713 until 1947 when it passed to Brighton council who made part a public park whilst the rest was leased out to the new University of Sussex. Stanmer House is straight ahead with Stanmer Great Wood behind it whilst the spire of the church is to the right.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Built by the Pelham family in 1724 on the site of the original manor which had once been held by the church until sold off by the crown in 1545. The Pelhams remained lords of the manor until 1947 when Brighton Corporation took over the running of the estate, part of which was given over to the new University of Sussex in 1961. The parish church is directly opposite the manor.
