Dist:0.3km<br/>This is a significant boundary wall, built mainly of large flints with mortar infill. The estate is private and a sign on the gate at the bottom of this hill reminds you of that.

Dist:0.4km<br/>I found a piece of ground high enough to be able to see over the wall into Hursley estate. Here are the remains of Merdon Castle, built in 1138 by Henri de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen. It was particularly useful during the 12th century Civil War between Stephen and his cousin Empress Matilda. It was built on the earthworks of an Iron Age hillfort. Because it lies wholly within Hursley estate it is not open to the public, but this peek of evidence shows some substantial remains. http://www.southernlife.org.uk/castles_forts.htm

Dist:0.6km<br/>The estate is surrounded by a flint wall, but here is a particularly large gate on the northern side. The estate is private but it is possible from here to get glimpses of the substantial remains of Merdon Castle.

Dist:0.7km<br/>From the roadside verge at the only point where you can get public access to this square. There are arable fields backed by a wooded are on steep hillside known as Juniper Bank.

Dist:0.7km<br/>This is taken near the village of Standon just out of sight round the bend. The western edge of the square is 10 metres away from the viewpoint, at about the position of the second catseye from the right.
