Dist:0.3km<br/>Now once again temporarily empty like so many other public houses the 'Firkin' [also recently somewhat sadly titled the 'Forester and Firkin'] is more properly known as 'The Sheridan', named after Richard Brinsley Sheridan, playwright and sometime MP for Stafford.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This pub had many names over the years, which tends not to be a good sign. It became one of the pubs run by the Firkin Brewery, and was known as The Forester & Firkin. Later it was renamed The Firkin. When photographed in May 2010, it had closed down and was available to rent. Apparently it had closed some time prior to then. As at the end of October 2010, the pub was still on the market for letting.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The Colonade, Eastgate Street. The entrance probably represents the remains of a C16th court on the road end of a burgage plot. The date over the door says 1560 and the passage leads through to a range of small shops. The adjacent buildings are C19th.

Dist:0.3km<br/>When photographed in May 2010, the pub belonged to Enterprise Inns, and though open, the owners were seeking a new tenant. Subsequently they decided to sell it, and contracted a sale with Joules Brewery of Market Drayton, Shropshire. The sign had seen better days and has the name of Enterprise Inns on it, so probably has been or will be replaced. The name of the Rose & Crown is frequently found on pubs. It is thought it originates from the outcome of the War of the Roses, but there are other theories. [[2141756]].

Dist:0.3km<br/>When photographed in May 2010, this pub belonged to Enterprise Inns. In September 2010 they contracted to sell it to the new Joules Brewery. The brewery have recently started brewing at their new £1.5 million brewery at Market Drayton, Shropshire. The pub became the 19th the brewery have acquired. [[2141781]].

Dist:0.3km<br/>William Salt [1808 -1863] was a London banker whose family originated from Staffordshire. He founded one of the first public banks in Stafford, but although he frequently visited the town and bought property he never lived there. He was collector of topographical and genealogical books and manuscripts and became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians. When he died his widow agreed to donate his books and manuscripts to the County of Stafford. The Library was first established in 1872 and moved to its present site in Eastgate Street in 1918. Salt's Collection is still available to members of the public.
