The town hall with its 170 foot clock tower was built in 1889 and cost £130,000. It was seen as representative of the town's growing economic importance and was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The building on this corner is of Gothic design. At least in architectural terms it is a fitting neighbour for the splendid Middlesbrough Station (behind the photographer). At present the place is used as Spensleys Emporium public house http://www.visitmiddlesbrough.com/site/things-to-do/products/spensleys-emporium-p94241, one of the trendy hostelries in the local 'Club-scene'.

Dist:0.2km<br/>What an impressive building ! Sadly the only camera available on this brief visit to the town was the one in the mobile-phone. The image shows the SE corner of the massive Gothic structure. Once used as railway warehousing, it has been converted into a big kids' night-club, predictably called 'The Cornerhouse'.
