Dist:0.1km north<br/>Apparently being used as a depot whilst maintenance works are being carried out, according to the signs. This is between the A31 (behind) and the M3 (ahead).

Dist:0.3km north<br/>The square is divided by two roads running north-south through it. To the left (east) is the A31, part of the original route past Winchester towards Southampton. To the right is the M3 now carrying most of the traffic. The road bends to the right through the square then climbs to the left in the following square to the horizon at Twyford Down. The photo is taken from a footbridge that carries the South Downs Way across both roads.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>The lane is a cul de sac with this at the end. It is evidently a converted farm. It now serves as the HQ of Hampshire County Council's Museums and Archives service. Surprisingly, HCC owns many farms which it normally rents out to encourage agriculture. I suspect that this one was cut off from its land by the construction of the M3. Seen is the entrance to a courtyard with some modern buildings on the far side.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>Looking north towards Highcliffe from the footbridge linking St Catherine's Hill to Twyford Down. The M3 sweeps round east of Winchester, cutting through the chalk ridge carrying the Alresford Road.

Dist:0.4km north<br/>The footbridge carries the South Downs Way out of Winchester (a mile to the left) to Eastbourne (99 miles to the right). The A31 was the original road through this gap between the hills, now superseded by the M3 but still busy in its own right.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>Only 20 yards from crossing the M3, this footpath junction seems miles from anywhere. Looking east, the South Downs Way heads left, the route to the right doubles back onto the A31.

Dist:0.5km north<br/>Many people use this route but very few see this view. Taken from the footbridge across the motorway used by the South Downs Way. Looking north into the next square towards the gap through Magdalen Down to the east of Winchester. The M3/A34 junction is just over the brow of the hill.

Dist:0.6km north<br/>Although this is a minor road, there is still a traffic sign showing Park and Ride information showing that this is a busy peak-time route. The original route into Winchester has been diverted here, to make way for the M3 which can be seen in the middle distance and curves round to the left of the picture.
