The rest of the station is receiving a re-vamp at present, but it has been going on for a long time. This old footbridge no doubt stretches back to the age of steam, or at least the end of it. Its style reminds us of the great network that used to reach every part of the British Isles.

The bus in front of the station building is a direct link to the Eden Project. This is also the St Austell bus station with services to surrounding villages. The station building is a new structure which is not much of an improvement on the previous one.

I am unsure whether the Motorail terminal adjacent to the railway station has been redeveloped in the last 31 years. Shunting loco 08840 was stabled on a sleepy July Sunday in 1974

This looks like a large disused chapel on the corner of Trevarthian Road and Tregarne Terrace, but I cannot trace any information about it.

The bus station is directly outside the railway station at St Austell. Both are being refurbished and the job is complete at the front.

In an 'eclectic "Queen Anne" style' http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=476282&mode=adv . With its strikingly rich red brick and terracotta detailing, the building, occupied by Natwest, stands out on the corner between High Cross Street and East Hill, facing down Church Street. "Erected in 1898, it was designed by a Luxulyan-born architect, Silvanus Trevail so that a gable end faced each of the roads which approached it. The wrought iron gate to Cemetery Park opposite the railway station frames an advertisement on the other side of the road. The wrought ironwork was designed and produced locally at Charlestown Forge.

The driver of 47479 with an early morning train for Penzance looks back along the platform at St. Austell as he waits for the green flag from the guard. The old Great Western Railway semaphore signal already indicates that the road is clear ahead. Meanwhile British Rail employee walks along the paved route provided for porters trolleys to cross the line - the long section at track level on this side is necessary because the platforms are staggered. On the left is a short siding which originally provided rail access to a goods shed. Both of these items have been removed since this photograph was taken. The houses on the left are on Tregarne Terrace which connects with Trevarthian Road. Trevarthian Road is split into two sections by the railway, which are joined together by the footbridge visible ahead. Originally there was a level crossing at this point which had not been sanctioned by parliament but was unavoidable because of the gradients that would have been required on the road if a bridge was provided. Subsequently, Palace Road was opened which gave access to the road bridge at the other end of the station and the level crossing closed in 1931.

The oval, somewhat Art Deco design of the new wrought iron gates in the newly regenerated Cemetery Park opposite the St Austell railway station provides a sinuous foreground of reaching, climbing stems and tendrils. It provides a bit of movement to a somewhat static station frontage. The wrought ironwork was designed and produced locally at Charlestown Forge. The station is partly refurbished: the bus station, conveniently directly outside the station is completed, but the old footbridge is yet to receive attention.
