At one time the trains of two major railway companies ran through Nottingham. The Midland Railway ran roughly west to east and the Great Central Railway ran south to north. It is the latter whose route is seen here, running alongside Trent Street on a viaduct so as to clear the Midland's tracks and its station a short distance behind the camera. Trains last used this viaduct in 1974 and the tracks were lifted soon afterwards, but thirty years later rails were once again laid along the viaduct to serve Nottingham Express Transit and its trams. The overhang carries the platforms of the Station Street terminus but beyond the tramstop the viaduct has been replaced by a concrete one to bring the trams eventually down to street level as they pass through the city centre.

From 1900, when services were transferred from London Road to the new Victoria Station, Grantham line trains snaked above Sneinton on a series of brick arches and bridges from Weekday Cross Junction – now the site of the Nottingham Contemporary art gallery – to London Road and Trent Lane Junction. Apart from the bridge abutments either side of the canal east of London Road http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1891197 , the only remains of the line are this set of blue-brick arches between Maltmill Lane and Popham Street. This line was last used, for freight traffic, in 1974. Nottingham Contemporary is in the background on the left, next to the former High Pavement Unitarian Chapel, whose tall broach spire is a familiar landmark. A little enclave between the high ground of the Lace Market area and Canal Street. Probably largely industrial in character in its earlier days, like this, although much was used for housing in the inter-war period.
