6-Week Mindfulness Course in Hackney Central

WE ARE INVITING YOU TO ATTEND OUR 6-WEEK Mindfulness Practices in Daily Life Course IN HACKNEY CENTRAL AND EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF THIS LIFE-ENHANCING PRACTICE.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a form of meditation, a word that is often misunderstood, which has been shown to be a life-enhancing practice and to help people with a history of depression, anxiety, addiction, chronic pain, general stress, anger and other overwhelming emotions. A central idea is that we all spend too much time ‘in our heads’, usually thinking about the past or the future, and so we lose touch with the present moment.

Our thoughts often contribute to unhappiness, anxiety, worry, and other forms of emotional pain. Such thoughts can become very powerful and they use up all our attention and time, and contribute to painful feelings. The aim of the mindfulness practice is to loosen the grip our thoughts have, and so to reduce their power.

Mindfulness is a way of developing a relationship with ourselves and the world that is attentive and accepting. Often we find ourselves worrying about the future and getting lost in thoughts about the past that keep us trapped in old patterns that we automatically repeat. This can rob us of our ability to be in the present moment. Mindfulness helps us to purposefully notice our thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations freshly and without judgement.

What is the aim of the course?

The course consists of experiential exercises and practices that will help you to:

- become familiar with the workings of your mind,
- notice the times when you are at risk of getting caught in old habits of mind that re-activate downward mood spirals,
- explore ways of releasing yourself from those old habits,
- put you in touch with a different way of knowing yourself the world,
- notice small beauties and pleasures in the world around you instead of living in your head,
- be kind to yourself instead of wishing things were different all the time,
- to accept yourself as you are, rather than be critical and judging yourself.

This 6-week course will introduce you to different mindfulness practices. We will explore the nature of our distracted minds and learn ways to return to the present moment in ways which are kind and compassionate.

Who and how and how many people can take part in the course?

The course is open for general public. It is also suitable for people that have previously suffered from depression but that are not currently depressed. It is also suitable for people who have a history of battling other low mood related issues such as stress, anxiety and low self-esteem.

It is important that participants are able to commit to attending on a weekly basis and practice daily, as research has shown that people who practice regularly are most likely to benefit from mindfulness. There will be a mix of teaching, discussion and mindfulness practices.

This course is taught in a group format. We aim to keep the groups relatively small with up to 10 participants.

When and where will the course take place?

The course will be run on Wednesdays between 18.00 and 20.00 from 18th January to 22nd February 2012. There are 6 weekly sessions that will take place on Wednesdays at
The Centre for Better Health, 1A Darnley Road, Hackney Central, E9 6QH

What is the cost?

The introductory fee for the course is £60 and includes hand-outs and CDs with guided mindfulness practices. There are discounts available for students and people on low income. In order to reserve your place or find out more please email Luka on luka.lvcounselling@gmail.com or phone him on 07752903283.

Who will facilitate the course?

Luka Hadrych - mental health professional and mindfulness instructor working for the NHS in East London.
