Dist:0.4km north<br/>This South Woodford junction has always been known as Charlie Brown's, presumably after the landlord of a pub which stood here rather than the cartoon character. Today it's a concrete jungle of flyovers, but with the modest River Roding flowing beneath. In this view looking north, we are standing under the M11, the bus is travelling west from Ilford towards Walthamstow and the two levels of flyovers in the background carry the spur roads which link the North Circular Road with the motorway.

Dist:0.9km southeast<br/>This small parade of shops is known as Claybury Broadway and is located off Clayhall Avenue, running alongside the A1400 Woodford Avenue and leading into Stoneleigh Road. Shops in shot include the Clayhall Fish Bar, Norman Goldberg Kosher Butchers and Joe's Food Ltd, as well as an off-licence called Star Wine at the extreme left of the picture.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>This area of former floodplain by the River Roding was designated a linear park after construction of the M11. It provides a pleasant north-south leisure route alongside the rather sluggish Roding. The new tree planting will in time screen the motorway, which has a roar like a jumbo jet. Here we are looking north, with the river to our right and the motorway on the left. Redbridge roundabout is half a mile behind us.

Dist:1.1km west<br/>Taken from the bridge over the A406 at the site of Gates Corner, this was a crossroads until the mid 1970's. The Queen Mary College student accommodation was on the left, where the new flats can be seen. The Gates garage site was above the retaining wall on the right and is now occupied by a Waitrose supermarket.
