Dist:0.5km<br/>Up until the 1930s and the building of the North Orbital Road nearby, Sleapshyde was just an isolated rural hamlet with a farm, a pub, a chapel, and a few cottages. Since then it has expanded considerably. This green is the historical centre of the hamlet. The grey metal post in the centre carries a nameboard with "Sleap's Hyde", while old Ordnance Survey maps from the 1870s up to the 1930s describe the hamlet as Sleepshyde.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This Grade II Listed pub is on the High Street. The English Heritage Listed Buildings website describes the exterior thus:- "Circa early C19 with later C19 extensions. Weatherboarded timber frame with plain tile roof, hipped on right. Rendered brick extension with slate roofs. Brick axial stacks. The original house was a 2-room plan weatherboarded cottage with a central axial stack. The right hand (S) bay was added later in C19 and the back range (E) is even later C19 or early C20. There are outshuts on the left (N) and rear (E) of the original cottage. 2 storeys. 3-window west front. C19 2-light casements with glazing bars. Panelled and glazed door to right of centre with small C20 gabled porch; another door on left with glazed door and canopy. Weatherboarded outshut on left and taller brick range at rear."

Dist:0.8km<br/>The North Orbital Road was an early precursor to the M25 Motorway and was planned in the 1920s as a road circulating around the north side of London at about a 20 mile radius of Charing Cross. It was planned to start at Colnbrook on the A4 and, skirting past Rickmansworth, St Albans, Hatfield, Hoddesdon, and Brentwood, to terminate at Tilbury, a distance of about 75 miles. In the event only sections of it got built before the Second World War intervened. Some sections of it were then planned to be incorporated into Ringway 4, the outermost of the four London ringways that were designed, but never built, in the 1970s. This is taken, with snow still on the ground, from the footbridge looking towards the north-eastern end of the approximate 400 metre long dog-bone roundabout at Colney Heath.
