Dist:0.4km<br/>View SW, towards Bromsgrove; ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line. This was on a Summer Saturday in the first year of Nationalisation, so ex-Midland 4F 0-6-0 is temporarily numbered M4023. It had only one 0-6-0T banking at the back; a Down train is just disappearing from view.

Dist:0.5km<br/>View SW, towards Bromsgrove, Worcester, Cheltneham, Gloucester and Bristol; ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line. The two miles at 1-in-37 of the Lickey Incline is the steepest bank on any main line in Britain and in the days of Steam all but the lightest trains had to be banked up from Bromsgrove to Blackwell. This Weston-super-Mare - Birmingham express, headed by LMS Compound 4P 4-4-0 No. M935 (temporary number, later 40935) had the dedicated Lickey banker, 0-10-0 No. 22290 'Big Bertha', blasting behind.

Only one platform remained, a temporary Portakabin-style ticket office and empty disused banking engine sheds on the right. Good view of the Lickey Incline though (named after hills to the north-west of incline). See [[[5684]]] for view from the top of incline (much nicer).

This was a Rail Tour in April 1955, sponsored by 'Trains Illustrated' (Ian Allan), Paddington - Bristol - Birmingham - Paddington, thus entailing an ascent of the three-mile at 1-in-37 infamous incline between Bromsgrove and Blackwell. The locomotive chosen was 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 7017 'G.J. Churchward' and we had the 0-10-0 58100 'Big Bertha' as banker here. Owing to restricted clearances this 'Castle' had to come off at Bournville and LMS Class 5 No. 44842 worked us through New Street, handing over to another 'Castle' No. 7007 at Bordesley Junction. Note the ecstatic onlookers on the Down platform; as one of the participants on the Tour I am surprised I was able to jump out and get this shot.
