Temperature is still only minus 8 at 11.a.m in the small valley between Linton village and The Fording.

Walkers head towards the village across the frozen ground. Morning fog has just cleared but the temperature is minus 8 and the trees hang on to their coating of frost. The treeline to the left marks the course of a small brook and in times past, a route towards Ross. To the right, the hill slopes down to the valley of the Rudhall Brook.

Normally grazed by sheep, for 3 days the field becomes a car park.

The tup (third from left,standing) is in the right place at the right time! On the hillside opposite is part of the South Herefordshire Golf Course, and in the distance right is Penyard Hill.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Looking north-east towards the Linton Ridge. The Rudhall Brook enters the artificial lake at this point.

Dist:0.1km<br/>Two pleasant short walks lead off from this point: either climb the side of the valley up to Shutton following the course of an unnamed, tree-shaded brook, or follow the course of the Rudhall Brook through the valley to Pinford Farm.

Dist:0.1km<br/>From the meadow near Linton looking south-west across Fording Farm buildings to the South Herefordshire Golf Course on the other side of the Rudhall Valley. The cow pats were very fresh, but there was no livestock to be seen, they were probably down the other end of this very large and undulating field.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The M50 motorway passes unseen but not unheard across the wooded hillside above the Rudhall valley. The map indicates a pond here, but it must have dried up this summer.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The bracken plant was much used in the past for animal bedding, as a covering for potato clamps and as a source of potash for glassmaking. The fronds die off during autumn frosts.
