Shooters Hill Homepage


Shooters Hill is the highest point on the old A2 heading east from London. This view looks back from just below the summit towards central London about ten miles away (though the view on the days it was taken was too haze to make out the buildings of the City). The bus stop on the left serves the Memorial Hospital [[1133961]].

This hospital was built in 1925 as a memorial to victims of the Great War, and was said to be the first large voluntary hospital to be built in England since the War. It was a general hospital with medical, surgical, maternity and children's wards. This main building was added to over the years, and a large outpatients department constructed by the NHS in 1953. Some of the later buildings were demolished and replaced with new ones in the early years of the 21st century. It is now an NHS-run psychiatric hospital.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The name "Crown Woods Lane" applies (according to street maps) to a route connecting the main roads of Shooters Hill (at this end) and Rochester Way. But only the first few hundred metres, leading to the car park for Oxleas Woods, is open to motor traffic, and the barrier shown here is closed at 6pm.

A sign on the wall says there was a public house on the site since 1741 (when this was the main turnpike road from London to Dover), though the present building is Victorian. At the top of the hill in the background is the water tower [[228327]].

Dist:0.3km<br/>This garden was part of the estate around Severndroog Castle. These formal terraces are near Jack Wood. Terraces was meant to have a view. But trees have overgrown and now just a sheltered garden with nearby rose garden.
