This Nicholas Hawksmoor church, designed in the early 18th century, was badly damaged in the Blitz. The interior has been completely renovated. It stands just off The Highway in Wapping.

This is where the boats used to leave London for Aberdeen. Most of the old warehouses here have now been converted into flats for City workers and "yuppies".

This high-rise forms part of the block of office towers at Thomas More Street in London, about 5 minutes from Tower Bridge. Sir Thomas More (7 February 1478 – 6 July 1535), known also as Saint Thomas More, was an English lawyer, writer, and politician. The new steel and glass buildings house offices of banks and technology companies.

Looking out across the Thames from Wapping. This is the Pier Head at Wapping and the entrance to what was the Western Dock. These docks were created at the start of the 19th century when ships coming up river into London sometimes had to wait days to unload their cargoes. It was the start of a huge dock building programme. Today, the dock entrance is a garden, the dock has been drained - apart from a few canals - and a Sports Centre and housing estate cover the area. The Dock Master's house, built in the late 18th century, is one of the few surviving buildings on the waterfront.

St. George in the East is situated immediately east of Whitechapel, between Stepney, Shadwell and Wapping. The church of St. George in the East with its 160 ft tower, was built in 1714-29 to the designs of Nicholas Hawksmoor, and created a separate parish from Stepney. In 1886 the churchyard was landscaped as a public garden. The interior of the church was severely damaged by incendiaries in May 1941, a temporary building serving the parish until being rebuilt in 1960.

It is hard to imagine that just over 30 years ago, this area was one huge inland dock. The London Dock at Wapping was completed in 1805 to serve the growing trade coming into London. By the 1960s the docks were almost derelict so the London Docklands Development Corporation drained the area and built a huge estate of mixed housing. The canals that remain are a link with the past but this is now a quiet residential area where once it was the heart of dockland.

These buildings are at the junction of Cable St and Royal Mint St in the East End of London. Cable St was the site of a turning point in British history when on the 4th of October 1936 the ordinary working people of the East End stood up to Oswald Mosley in the “Battle of Cable St”. A coalition of workers trades unionists and the Jewish population of the area dealt the British Union of Fascists a blow that was not fatal but permanently damaging to their cause. This photo shows some of the few buildings in the area that survive from that time. This was the symbolic beginning of the fight against fascism in the U.K a fight that has never been fully won as the existence of extreme right wing racist political parties attests. Built in 1760 to replace a building of 1617 St John's church survived until the blitz of 1940, when it was destroyed apart from the tower. It remained derelict for the next 40 years (this photo was taken in 1980). Docklands redevelopment have since seen it restored as living accommodation.
