Dist:1.0km north<br/>There is a story that in the 19c a married woman apparently died in the village and her body was removed to the church for burial. Her wedding ring was allowed to remain on her finger. The parish clerk, in the middle of the night, dug up the coffin, unscrewed the lid and tried to remove the ring from the body by cutting off the finger. Suddenly the woman sat upright and uttered a loud scream. The poor woman had been prematurely buried in a trance like state. The woman's husband was so overjoyed on getting his wife back from the dead that he gave the parish clerk a web of the finest linen. Who said crime doesn't pay!

Dist:1.0km south<br/>The railway operated from 1857 to 1885 and serviced the Ailesbury mines in Scugdale supplying ore to Stockton ironworks. It joined the Picton to Stokesley branch of the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Railway just behind where the photographer is standing.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>Another view of the former railway yard office (see [[[29404]]]) in the grounds of Prestons of Potto. The Picton to Stokesley branch of the Cleveland and North Yorkshire Railway was opened in 1857. This hut could well date from then.

Dist:1.1km north<br/>Just downstream from the present bridge stood a mill built in 1757. It was built originally as a paper mill but was converted to flax in the 1850s. The flax was grown locally and used in the manufacture of sail cloth. This mill closed in 1908 following the decline of sailing ships and thereafter used for public meetings. It was demolished in 1937 when the road was widened.
