Dist:0.1km<br/>The name of the field according to the 1843 tithe map. An earthwork is visible to the left of the picture which could possibly be the mound of a windmill from which the field and hill are named after though I have yet to find a record which indicates one was here, neither the OS first edition map of 1813 or the Yeakell & Gardner Map of 1778-83 indicate a presence. The building at the far end of the field on the right is the rear of the Barley Mow public house which although is part of Selmeston is actually in the parish of Alciston, the parish boundary between the two running along the centre of the A27 at this point.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking back towards the junction with the A27. Now a dead end lane which allows access onto the South Downs at Bopeep only, however, between 1792 and 1819 this road was part of the main Lewes-Eastbourne turnpike. The original route had followed what is now the Old Coach Road along the foot of the Downs towards Alfriston and Long Bridge, this was changed in 1792 when the turnpike left the Old Coach Road at Bopeep Farm then headed north along this lane then towards Berwick Common, across the Cuckmere at Chilver Bridge, then through the grounds of Wootton manor until it reached Swines Hill Gate the site of the current junction between the A27/A22 combined and the route into Polegate. This cumbersome route was replaced by another more direct one in 1819 which is more or less the current one used by the A27.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Taken from the crossroads formed by Lewes Road, the A27 and Common Lane from which the picture is taken from. The lane uses an old Roman terraceway to climb the north escarpment of the South Downs.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Names include 19 year old Arther Chilvers of Manor Villa, Selmeston; Sid Coleman and David Gumbrill of the Royal Sussex Regiment; 32 year old James Hayward of Alciston; Charles Hylands of Old Town Cottage, Selmeston; Charles Short of Firle and Private W R West of Chalvington. 39 year old Charles Gowers died on board HMS Hunter in April 1940 and 19 year old Hugh Stacey of Alciston. He was in the Royal Armoured Corps and the recipient of the Bronze Star from the US Army.
