Dist:0.4km<br/>National Cycle Network http://www.sustrans.org.uk/default.asp?sID=1089735289781 route 1 is the principal long-distance cycle route up the east side of Britain. Here (between Ryhope and South Hetton) it follows a long length of the disused railway, crossing the A19 at this point. There was a time (pre 1960s)when a large proportion of working men cycled to and from work. The figure on the bridge must be one of few survivors of this breed.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This subway under the northbound carriageway of the A1018 carries a cycle route which links the town of Seaham with National Cycle Network route 1. http://www.sustrans.org.uk/default.asp?sID=1089735289781 Unfortunately the last 100m of the route (just the far side of the subway) is a muddy field-edge path which very much detracts from the value of the link.
