Dist:0.7km<br/>Walkers on the south bank of the River Greta between Brignall footbridge and Greta bridge have two streams to cross, the first, and smaller, being easy as this substantial footbridge crosses the tributary which rejoices in the name of Gregory Beck (one feels it should perhaps star in a film...) On the far side, the path continues left along the riverside, or turns sharp right as a wide (but muddy) track leading up towards Scargill.

Dist:0.7km<br/>It is not obvious from the 1:50000 map which side of Gill Beck has the path. On the ground, the reason becomes clear as the path crosses the beck unbridged three times within 200m. This is the third crossing (as you head downstream) and the most difficult. At this summer level one can hop across rocks (but they are slippery) and scramble up roots on the far bank. At higher levels (I've always been here in winter before), the tree trunk provides a way across if your balance is good.

Dist:1.0km northeast<br/>Gill Beck flows into the River Greta in Hardy Wife Wood. Seen here looking up the Greta, the level is low as we approach summer. The Greta needs a great deal of rain to be paddleable, at which time it becomes a very fine and sustained grade 3 river, but the level falls as quickly as it rises and is only in condition for a short time.
