Dist:0.2km<br/>In the 18th and 19th centuries, when lime was extensively used on acid clay soil to improve cultivation, lime kilns were widespread. Beehive shaped, with a hole in the top, kilns were usually built on the sides of steep hills and against cliff faces, to make the loading of limestone and coal easier. Alternating layers of limestone and coal were burnt to produce the lime.

Dist:0.3km<br/>A lime kiln in a reasonable state of preservation situated close to the B6270 between Gunnerside and Satron. The kiln is at the lowest point of access land which stretches from the roadside to the top of Satron Moor.

Dist:0.4km<br/>At this point the Swale undercuts its left bank and has caused some footpath problems here. Beyond are houses on the 'sunny side' of Swaledale at Dyke Heads and Shore Gill. Most settlement along this narrow dale tends to be on the north side, where houses could be built to face the sun.
