Dist:1.1km south<br/>The word “Herdwyck”, meaning sheep pasture, is recorded in documents going back to the 12th century. These sheep are sturdy, wish course wool found mainly on the fells. The true origin of the breed is not known. It is thought that sheep may have come into Cumbria from a Spanish Armada ship which was wrecked off the Cumbrian coast, but this cannot be substantiated. More likely is that they may have been introduced by Norse-Irish settlers in the 10th and 11th centuries, or they may be derived from animals introduced by Neolithic or Bronze Age herdsmen. They are suited to life on the open fells because they have a 'heafing' instinct. This means they become 'heafed' to their own piece of fell, and individual sheep almost always return to that part of the fell.

Dist:1.1km south<br/>The kissing gate is a traditional gate hung in a U or V shape that allows one person to pass at a time. In order for one person to pass fully through the gate they have to close it on the next person. Legend has it that at this point, when the two are on either side of the gate, the person in front ‘refuses’ entry to the second person until presented with a kiss.

Dist:1.1km south<br/>The church is a good example of a simple church built in the Victorian era. In 1865 the old church was demolished and a new one designed by Miles Thompson of Kendal. The windows were designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and made by William Morris & Co. The tower has a peel of eight bells.

Dist:1.1km south<br/>Many churches have a lych gate built over the main entrance to the enclosed area round the church. The name, also spelt lich or lytch, is from the Anglo Saxon 'lich' meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and unconsecrated ground, where the bearers sheltered with the coffin, waiting for the clergyman to lead the procession before the burial. The original lych gates had seats, a lych cross and a lych stone - a slab on which the coffin rested.
