With an ex-Midland 3F 0-6-0 behind, resting on a Sunday is LMS Stanier 8F No. 8405, which was built in 1943 and was one of 96 built at Swindon Works and employed on the GWR/WR for 3 - 4 years before being acquired by the LMSR; this one was transferred in 12/46 and lasted until 7/66.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Now closed as a Locomotive stabling and servicing depot this view shows a number of locomotives outside the fuel shed. Saltley was home to a large number of train crew who worked local passenger, long distance passenger as well as mail and freight trains from this Birmingham depot. It was a very busy location and one could find several locomotives waiting to be serviced at this depot. New Street Station was not far and many trains changed locos here or in the case of freight traffic at Washwood Heath near by. Home of the Saltley seagulls.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A view from the north end of the island platform of Saltley Station (closed 6/3/68), towards Washwood Heath Yard, and Derby/Leicester: ex-Midland NE - SW main line. The engine is on the Up Camp Hill Goods line, while the two tracks over to the left are the Down and Up Lawley Street Goods lines. The signalbox in the middle distance is Saltley Sidings: the Canal Wharf branch went left, just out of sight is the viaduct carrying the Stechford - Aston line over the main lines and on the right is the great Metropolitan-Cammell Works. There was a constant flow of trains of all kinds, and of light engines to and from the Locomotive Depot south of the station. Here running Up tender-first is LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0 No. 44057 (built 1925, withdrawn 11/65) - a type still numerous in the area in 1965 in spite of the rapid advent of Diesels.
