Dist:0.5km<br/>The great treasure of the Church is the Salamander Font, by tradition presented to the Church by King Richard I, through there is no documentary evidence to support this. The usually accepted version is that the font was given as an offering of thanks by King Richard I, Coeur de Lion in gratitude to Abbot William from nearby Robertsbridge Abbey for his release from captivity in Bavaria. This old tradition is supported by the fact that the salamander, a creature which medieval mythology claimed could live in fire, was the emblem of a Crusader, but though the tradition is of great antiquity, antiquarians have not discovered any supporting evidence.
