Dist:0.5km<br/>A general view of St. George Park, on the eastern edge of the inner city in Bristol, England. Many old photographs of the park show that it was a popular area in Edwardian times. (As the song says "I was strolling in the park, one day. In the merry, merry month of May!") There is a banjo shaped lake fed by a natural stream. It has an island, which servers as the nesting place of swans, ducks and moorhens. Until the 1970's, this lake was used for boating, with two separate areas: one for rowing boats and canoes, and the other for small paddle boats, both being available for hire. The lake has since been drained and unsilted, and the boats removed. Now it is used mainly for fishing, and by model boat enthuiasts. A children's play area,which was modernised several years ago. Two tennis courts and bowling greens available for hire. A skate board and cycle activity area with ramps and tumps. At one time there was a band-stand with wrought iron work, but this was not maintained and was eventually demolished. Fortunately, the site, a raised area is still there but now has several rose-beds and benches. Band concerts are still held in the park during the summer months, but are now generally played near to and not on the actual band-stand site. (info from wikipedia)

Express locomotive power was at a premium on this peak Summer Saturday and LMS 4F 0-6-0 No. 44167 was being used on a Paignton - Nottingham relief, which will have taken over from a GW engine at St Philips Marsh on the Bristol Relief line and is routed up through Filton to Yate and the Midland line.

This was a Summer Saturday, when this express and many others took the ex-GW route - the route still in use - out of Bristol via Filton Junction and Westerleigh West Junction to reach the ex-Midland main line to the North at Yate. It was a stiff climb, mostly at 1-in-75, up to Filton Junction, so LMS 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 5651 'Shovell' is going flat-out here - and making a splendid noise - on the 'Devonian' (09.15 Paignton to Bradford Forster Square), which she has just taken over at Bristol Temple Meads.

The train crossing over on the ex-Midland Bristol - Birmingham main line through Mangotsfield is an Up Relief from the South-West, being banked up the 2¼ miles of about 1-in-70 by LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0 No. 44264 (built 1926, withdrawn 10/65).
