Dist:0.5km<br/>Rudbaxton, pronounced Ribbeston, was originally Rudepac's Town, rendered 'Rudepagstonia' in charter Latin, after the Norman Alexander de Rudepac. The remains of his stronghold, or motte, can be traced nearby.

Dist:0.5km<br/>In the centre of the monument are the figures of James Howard, in clerical dress, holding a skull (he died in 1668 aged 35) hand in hand with his wife Joanna, holding "a curious-looking object" - possibly not a skull since she was still alive when she commissioned the memorial in 1685.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The original dedication was to St Madoc (whose well was in the churchyard) but the Normans may have changed the patron. Parts of the church are mediaeval although there have been later additions and restorations: it is a very attractive building with a simple lime-washed tower in a peaceful rural setting. It's also worth a detour for the monuments inside!

Dist:0.5km<br/>Despite their clasped hands, they are not a married couple but siblings, son Thomas Howard (MP) and daughter Mary Howard standing to the right of their parents. They died in 1682 and 1685 respectively, Thomas reputedly in a duel fought close by: the red daub on his breast is said to represent the blood he shed.

Dist:0.5km<br/>A slight massaging of the facts gives the Welsh General's birthplace as the nearby family seat, Poyston Hall; in fact the house was being rebuilt in 1758 and the family had removed to Haverfordwest where he was born (see [[323941]]). Also, he was in fact buried in the family vault of St George's Hanover Square London, although he has a monument in St Paul's, and in Carmarthen.

Dist:0.5km<br/>On the left of his parents stands George, High Sheriff, who died in 1665 aged 32. He too is holding a skull and pointing at it signifying he is dead (despite his red lips...)

Dist:0.5km<br/>This extraordinary monument was erected by Joanna Howard in 1685 to commemorate members of her family (including herself) who lived in a nearby gentry mansion. It consists of five almost lifesize figures painted in bright colours, standing in three vertical recesses and all except Joanna, holding skulls. Below are explanatory inscriptions and the whole is surrounded by ornamentation with a pediment above. The colours may not be authentic but the whole thing makes a great impact, the figures having a warmth and humanity about them that is unusual to find in stone.

Dist:0.5km<br/>One of the many memorials to the military Pictons in this their family church, this one recalls Major General John Picton who died in 1815: "with a constitution broken down by fatigue, and exhausted by long Residence in a tropical climate" having served the whole of the Revolutionary War in Flanders, Holland and the East Indies - hence, one supposes, the lion although it has to be said that the local sculptor must never have seen one in real life!

Dist:0.7km<br/>Rudbaxton Water, glimpsed here behind the trees, runs down this little valley between the village of the same name to the southeast,and, east, the big house of Kilbarth. The road crosses just to the left of the picture.
