Trough commemorates coronation of King Edward VII. The pump seems strangely incongruous and I don't remember it from my youth. I also seem to remember the trough being somewhere else but I could well be wrong. Here's where the Roach Valley Way goes urban for a bit through the heart of Rochford. In fact the trough was originally situated at the entrance to Hockley Woods near the Bull Inn from where I remember it as a child.

The Marlborough Head public house is at the bottom end of West Street, estimated to be 17th century or earlier but extensively remodelled in the 20th century.

The building with the clock is now used by the WI, but was built in 1866 as Rochford's Corn Exchange. The clock commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897, and, I am pleased to relate, was telling the correct time when the photograph was taken. The building fell into disuse around the beginning of the First World War, but appears to have been taken up by the WI during the Second World War. The building beyond is Barclays Bank. The Women’s Institute was formed in 1915 with two purposes, firstly to revitalise rural communities and secondly to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The Freight House is now a social and commercial event venue complete with catering facilities, but used to the former Great Eastern Railway's goods shed at Rochford station. Its website is here http://www.thefreighthouse.co.uk/index.php The goods handling facilities at the station were never extensive and from old maps appear to have been comprised of no more than a couple of sidings, one of which went through this shed.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Whittinghams is a traditional type of garage where they serve your fuel to you. For the record the prices here on this day were £1.21 per litre for petrol and £1.35 per litre for diesel. The address is 84 West Street, yet old maps definitely describe the road as Church Street. The garage was built in 1924.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The Great Eastern Railway opened their branch line from Shenfield to Southend in 1889 and Rochford is an intermediate station on the line. These buildings probably date from that time although the large building on the left, which may have been the stationmaster's house, is now boarded up and to be let. Weekday trains, currently operated by National Express East Anglia, run every 20 minutes to London Liverpool Street and are scheduled to take about 50 minutes for the journey.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Up until very recently there used to be a miniature railway that circled the mound next to Rochford Reservoir. The terrace on the left here was the trackbed. The park is public, the track was unfenced, and it may have fallen victim to vandalism. The line of rough grass and nettles on the right marks the route of the River Roach.
