It starts as an outfall from the River Chess to the east of the town before flowing into the River Colne to the west. Here it is just downstream of the Chess outfall going under the bridge built to provide access to the new Salters Close housing estate.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Situated in the High Street, this Wesleyan Chapel was opened in 1866 in the site of a smaller chapel and coachbuilding firm. However, both properties were destroyed by fire in 1855, and the church subsequently bought the site. Being one of several churches in the Watford Circuit, services took place in this church until 1980 when they were transferred to St Mary's Parish Church in Church Street, TQ0694 refers. The former church was demolished in 1984 and offices now occupy the site, the postcode being WD3 1ET.

Dist:0.3km<br/>A southbound Metropolitan Line train approaches the Croxleyhall Farm Bridge from the Rickmansworth direction (and for those who collect such things, no, I did not get its number!). These tracks are shared between London Underground and Chiltern Railways. The London Underground trains go to and from Amersham and Baker Street and Aldgate, and the Chiltern Line trains run from London Marylebone to and from Aylesbury. The tracks leading to the right in front of the train go to Watford along a short section of track that is only used for early morning and late evening train positioning movements, forming one side of the "Croxley Triangle".

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is the western end of the surviving trackbed of the long-dismantled Watford to Rickmansworth railway, now in use as a concessionary footpath and bridleway known as the Ebury Way. Ebury Way is named after Lord Ebury who originally commissioned the railway. Opened in 1862, it was shortly afterwards taken over by the London & North Western Railway, but was an early victim of the post-war Nationalization of the railways, closing to passenger traffic in 1952. To the west of here, and immediately behind the photographer, the trackbed crosses over the canalized River Chess, but beyond that all trace of the trackbed and the original railway station, known as Rickmansworth Church Street from 1950 onwards, has disappeared under a new housing estate.

The Ebury Way also forms a section of National Cycle Network Route 6.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Salter's Cut is a short length of canal off the main Grand Union Canal at Batchworth Lock. The brewer Samuel Salter canalized the River Chess here in 1805 by building a lock next to the Grand Union to enable access by boat to his brewery. The Salter's Cut Lock is the one on the left in this photograph [[69120]]. The cut later served as a canal access to the gasworks.

In the photograph there is a thin plume of smoke rising from the chimney of the boat on the left, the "Digress", while the narrowboat on the right is "The Joker" whose home "reach" is Salter's Cut.

The latticework bridge beyond the boats is just a footbridge, possibly built to enable access by foot to a now disused lock on another cut to the left of the "Digress".
