River Penk flood plain flooded after several days of heavy rain during December from Hazlestrine canal bridge

At other times, artificial drainage is impeded by closing sluices to prevent it, and retain some flood waters. Some shallow pools (known as scrapes) have been created to provide the muddy conditions for feeding waders and other wildfowl. The heronry accommodates in excess of twenty breeding pairs each spring. Public access is restricted to organised events only. The hedge on the left conceals the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Looking north, the canal passes the Wildwood housing estate, which is behind allotments, some woodland and a park off to the right. The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal was opened in 1772, engineered by James Brindley. It links the River Severn at Stourport to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Great Haywood Junction in Staffordshire. There are 43 locks (45 if you don't fancy the deep wide locks at Stourport) and the canal is 46 miles in length.

The forty-six mile canal was fully open from Stourport to Great Haywood by 1772, engineered by James Brindley. At present, it is one of the most scenic and popular canals in England for leisure cruising, despite its 45 locks (43 if you use the deep wide locks at Stourport).
