Skelgate Lane is a narrow, walled pathway climbing from the B6270 west of Reeth, passing through a number of sharp bends to reach open moorland north-west of the village. The distant view is to Fremington Edge.

This green lane leads from the village to the moor edge and was probably used for moving animals out to moorland grazing. Its legal status was obscure for many years as it was neither a footpath or bridleway. The Coast to Coast path enters Reeth by this route.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A high wall, a small doorway and a drinking trough. These are the clues that indicate that this structure was once the village pinfold, where stray animals were 'locked up' until reclaimed by their owners [and a fine paid].
