Dist:0.2km<br/>The Queen may be a very young Victoria, or perhaps Queen Caroline (Caroline of Brunswick), the wife of King George IV. The Queen was very popular with the British public, while her estranged husband was not. Caroline died in 1821, but the pub looks as if it could date from around then, or even earlier. An oddity of the pub's sign and the names on the sides of the building, is that they all say Queens' Head, when you would expect (if you expect punctuation at all in pub names) Queen's Head. Dist:0.3km<br/>The school comes under Worcestershire County Council, but does have its own Governors acting as its governing body. The school takes pupils up to the age of nine. The school building was designed by A V Rowe and built in 1913.

Dist:0.3km<br/>It seems astonishing that what once must have been a fine villa, with a Doric porch, has been allowed to go to rack and ruin. Behind are the remains of the Ivy Needle Works, who also owned this house. These remains are also in a derelict state. Above the front door of the house, is a sign warning to keep out because of danger. The site the house and works are on, is bounded to the east by the railway line to Redditch Railway Station. Dist:0.3km<br/>The house belonged to the Ivy Needle Works of Abel Morrall Limited. The building behind is part of the derelict factory remains. Presumably the house was occupied by the owner or someone senior in the management. It dates from the early to mid-19th century. See also:- [[1983276]].

Dist:0.3km<br/>A diesel multiple unit [with vehicle M51146 nearest the camera] waits for departure time at Redditch station in the autumn of 1986. Today there is a single platform and the line has been electrified.

Dist:0.3km<br/>DMU pulls into Redditch station, southern terminus of the cross-city service through Birmingham to Lichfield Trent Valley. This station is 'relatively' new, having been relocated north of Windsor Street, where once in railway's heyday the station stood south of the road and the Midland Railway (later LMS) continued south to Studley, Coughton, Alcester (for connection to Bearley), Broom (for connection to Kineton), and Evesham.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This quite basic railway station serves a population of well over 73,000 people. For a town of its size, one would expect something better, but Redditch suffered when the railways were being cut back, and now the line terminates here. Maybe the situation will have to be rethought at some time in the future. The line to Redditch is electrified on the overhead line system. [[1983154]].

Dist:0.3km<br/>The line used to continue south and then east to Studley, it now forms the terminus of what was the Midland Railway's 'Barnt Green to Ashchurch Branch'. This is the station's 4th incarnation on slightly different sites and was opened in 1993.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The present bus station was rebuilt in 2002 as part of the remodelling of the huge Kingfisher Shopping Centre complex. The bus station occupies the ground floor at this end of the complex, with multi-storey car parking above. Opposite the bus station is the railway station. Before it was rebuilt, the bus station's main claim to fame was that it featured on a well-known postcard. This won a 1991 competition for the world's most boring postcard, organised by photographer Martin Parr. The present bus station is typical of its kind, confusing, cavernous, unattractive, badly lit and potentially dangerous for passengers as they dodge buses to get in and out of the dreary place.

Dist:0.3km<br/>The railway line used to continue where the footpath is, and at one time the railway station was somewhere around here. Today, on the left, is the bus station and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre. On the right is Plymouth Road. [[1983130]].

Dist:0.4km<br/>The golden cross is associated with the crusaders of the early medieval period, who enthused by the Catholic Church went on "crusades" to "free" Jerusalem. This sign shows a knight holding a shield with a golden cross. The connection between the pub, which is very far from being medieval, and the golden cross is not clear. [[1984435]].
