Dist:1.0km west<br/>Houses built in the 1930's. Typical whitewashed pebble dashing of the area. Difficult to imagine that before the 1930's this area was woodland and grazing pasture for cattle. One of the farms in the area was owned by the Rayne family who gave their name to Raynes Park.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>This is the main entrance to Battersea New Cemetery, off Lower Morden Lane, which was opened in 1891, presumably as space was used up in cemeteries nearer the centre of London. It is still managed by Wandsworth Borough Council. In the distance at the end of the drive is North East Surrey Crematorium http://www.nes-crematorium.org.uk/index.php photographed by Noel here [[30661]].

Dist:1.0km south<br/>Pyl Brook flows beyond the embankment in the distance but in front of the distant houses, which are on Derwent Road. The embankment has a couple of low sections and during a flood event the water spills over these, out of the brook, and begins to fill up the flood storage area in the foreground. At the downstream end of the pond are [[690798]] which allow the stored flood water to gradually rejoin the brook as the flood subsides.

This is also the Derwent Floodwash Local Nature Reserve and the boardwalk and platform (fenced area just to the left of the tree), next to the small marshy area and pond on the left, were built to enable local school pupils to use the site as an outdoor classroom for environmental education.

Dist:1.0km south<br/>A penstock is a sluice or gate that controls the flow of water. During a flood event these penstock gates, seen from within [[690771]], would allow stored flood water to gradually rejoin Pyl Brook, which is flowing on the other side of the embankment.
