Dist:0.5km<br/>This stream is one of several within the wood which have been diverted or modified to suit lead miners or the local corn mill. In this photo the stream passes through a short culvert beneath the flue [stone structure over beck]that runs up the hillside from Keld Heads Mill.

Dist:0.5km<br/>Difficult to make out, but these appear to be the start of two flues from the lead mill. It was normal to exhaust fumes from the smelters at a considerable distance from the mill. This had two purposes. Firstly, the noxious fumes were carried away from habitable areas - in this case to a chimney some 3 miles distant. Secondly the fumes condensed in the flue, creating deposits of lead in sufficient volume to justify scavenging it from the flue. This was often entrusted to children due to the restricted size of the flue. Life expectancy was not improved as a result!

Dist:0.6km<br/>An unusual Church of England building in this small village. In size it is more like a non conformist chapel, the interior is aisleless and the windows are plain glass. A charming little building, but it doesn't even achieve a mention in Pevsner's volume on the North Riding.

Dist:0.6km<br/>If following the public footpath from the tank road towards Preston village, walkers are advised not to try to stick to the official line of the path, unless equipped with a parachute. The sensible way is to use the grassy ramp seen here, then to find a route across the quarry floor. This shot shows the carboniferous limestone face on the left and the bedding plane that one walks across. Preston quarry closed in the 1970's.

Dist:0.6km<br/>The view of the village from the opposite side of the dale. Preston Scar is behind the village, with the limestone quarries almost totally hidden from this angle.

Dist:0.6km<br/>This was associated with the Keldheads Lead Mill and Mine which at one stage were the largest in the area. It is the one building of the mine complex which has a roof, doubtless due to its suitability as a farm store.

Dist:0.6km<br/>A K6 style telephone box is trying to hid behind a bush. In 1935, the Post Office commissioned a new kiosk from Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to celebrate the Jubilee of King George V. The K6 Jubilee Kiosk, as it is known, was similar to the K2 box, being made of cast iron and painted red but was 25% lighter in weight. By the end of the 1930s there were 20,000 K6 telephone boxes in use all over the UK.

Dist:0.6km<br/>Now used as a barn by nearby Tullis Cote Farm, this building was originally the peat store for the nearby [and long gone] Keld Heads Smelt Mill. This area marks the south eastern extremity of the Wensleydale and Swaledale lead mining grounds.
