Dist:0.4km<br/>Originally C18 with later additions, this was the home of the Picton family and in particular General Sir Thomas Picton, although he was born in Haverfordwest while the house was being rebuilt in 1758, see [[323941]] It is said to have a magnificent library, unfortunately not available to view. A farm adjoins and there is a lake in the grounds, seen here, the view being from the public footpath running to the east.

Dist:0.6km<br/>A fairly common damp-loving, spring-flowering plant which has a number of common names including garlic mustard, Jack-by-the-hedge and sauce-alone, and indeed it was used in sauces for fish and lamb in the C17/18, or as an ingredient for spring salads today. The leaves are best picked young before they become coarse. It was growing here near to the lake at Poyston Hall.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Oddly-shaped gate lodge guarding the entrance to Poyston Hall. The stone pillars on either side of the gateway are known, ?locally, as gate castles and they often have an upright stone on top as in this case. (I have read that traditionally the stones represented male and female according to shape!).

Dist:0.8km<br/>Cochlearia officinalis, a salt-loving coastal plant. In spring its white flowers can be seen easily along the roadside even some way inland, as here. Not a grass in any sense but its name derives from its anti-scorbutic properties and it was used by sailors for that purpose. Said to have been introduced by the Romans.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The willow and alder carr here accounts for the name which has also been given to the nearby airfield and hospital just north of Haverfordwest. Normally the water level would be higher but it has been a very dry spring.

Dist:0.9km<br/>May, and the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. The lake and woods are all that remain of the grand house and grounds built in the 17th century and lived in by the well known Owen and Phelps families to name a few. The old house was used as a hospital before being demolished. Too much Laurel and Rhodies were planted and are now plant pests.

Dist:0.9km<br/>The four-day Pembrokeshire County Show is drawing to a close and the airfield is obviously being used as a route for visitors or exhibitors. Here, we look out from stationary traffic on the A40, no doubt caused partly by the show traffic, as this afternoon's rain shows no signs of easing.
