Built on the site of a former brickworks. The ground level would originally have run through from where the photograph was taken to the houses on the horizon, giving some idea of the amount of material that was extracted to make bricks. The whole of this hilly area to the east of Nottingham is basically a large lump of clay in the form of soft mudstones and siltstones. The pub on the estate was built round a steam engine which powered the presses and other machinery. This engine has since been removed to the Wollaton Industrial Museum.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This footpath leads down to the housing development which can be seen immediately above the railings. This sunken area was formerly completely occupied by a brickworks which has completely removed the hillside. The name of the path retains the link to the former industry

Dist:0.1km<br/>This public house was built on the site of The Nottingham Patent Brick Company (see -[[674427]]) and incorporated this rather large and old horizontal single cylinder steam engine. This was possibly c1850 and installed secondhand in 1868 and worked here for 98 years - a very creditable performance. The cylinder is 21" bore x 66" stroke and the flywheel is 16' diameter and had been adapted for rope drive. The engine was removed from the pub in 1982 and is being slowly re-erected at Nottingham Industrial Museum.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The entrance to King George V Playing Field. The way the ground falls steeply to the right hand side can be clearly seen, and there is a similar fall on the other side of the road. This is due to the excavation of clays on both sides of the road for brickmaking, leaving it as a high embankment.

Dist:0.2km<br/>Looking along this street from Carlton Hill. Typical terraced housing from around the end of the 19th century. The planter is part of the modernisation of the local shopping area.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Another of the fine cast iron boundary posts of the then Borough of Nottingham. It makes an interesting contrast with the modern style of marking the boundary [[779965]]. The road name changes here as well.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is a further part of the former claypits associated with the brickworks mentioned in [[674426]]. Originally there was a tunnel under Standhill Road from where this picture was taken. Standhill Road remains as a narrow embankment between the two sections.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Sited on an old brick quarry, the red clay still shows through the grass. Photo taken from Standhill road, the grassed over spoil heap of Gedling coal pit is the highest point on the top left horizon.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A rather nondescript brick-built church of the mid-1930s, it is difficult to photograph due to the surrounding trees. A summer view would be even less informative!

Dist:0.4km<br/>A local shopping centre which still has a respectable variety of shops. Not many of the shops actually open on Sundays which is why it looks a bit deserted. The wide pavements mean that shopping is more relaxed than in many areas. Although historically much of this area belonged to the frontagers, the local Gedling Borough Council has modernised the paving and introduced trees and benches. Some businesses still extend onto the frontage either to display their wares or for alfresco refreshments.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The Free Man is a new Wetherspoon's pub created in a former Co-operative supermarket. The hoarding beyond surrounds the site of the now demolished Toby Jug http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1739838 . This had closed before The Free Man opened.
