Dist:0.1km north<br/>The ventilation shafts serve the newer southbound bore of the tunnel which was opened in 1967. They were designed by the architect Terry Farrell and were Grade II listed in 2000. The Ontario Tower is on the New Providence Wharf development and was completed in 2007. It has 260 residential flats and 169 hotel rooms arranged over 32 floors and is about 104 metres high. This view was taken from Blackwall Way.

Dist:0.1km north<br/>Amongst all the redevelopment in the Docklands there are occasional pockets of older buildings. Against the backdrop of the New Providence Wharf development is this terrace of Edwardian houses, viewed across Preston's Road. They were built by the former London County Council in 1904 as part of a scheme to provide social housing as cottage estates rather than the unpopular block dwellings. Originally there were 14 two-bedroom cottages but a 1960s modernization scheme converted them to 8 houses. The darkish green one is currently advertised for sale with four double bedrooms at about £460,000. The terrace is now Grade II listed.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>Poplar Dock was London's first railway dock when it opened in 1851, and belonged to various railway companies until it eventually closed in 1981. Today it is a marina with about 90 berths. In the background is the New Providence Wharf development.

Dist:0.2km north<br/>The line down the middle of the avenue represents the Greenwich Meridian, and carries on up the building in the distance. Incidentally don't take your GPS receiver to this line and expect it to read 0&#730; 00' 00".00000 W longitude! This is because the GPS system uses World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) longitudes which are defined, simply, in terms of the geometric centre of the Earth, whereas the Greenwich Meridian is defined in terms of the gravitational centre of the Earth, which is slightly different. 0&#730; 00' 00".00000 W longitude on your GPS should appear about 100 metres east of this location, near the Virginia Quay memorial, whereas you should read about 0&#730; 00' 05".7 W longitude here on this line. As an aside (!) this is the Barratt-built Virginia Quay housing development.
