Dist:0.5km<br/>The walk goes south west from Pontyates, across reclaimed land, which until fairly recently was an open cast coal mine http://www.sirgaerfyrddin.gov.uk/English/leisure/countryside/Walking/Documents/Pontiets Walks.pdf . The trail runs adjacent to a section of the disused Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1403440 . The board is outside the garden of the Pontyates Welfare Hall.

Dist:0.6km<br/>For a location shot, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1010634 . This is on the disused Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway, which ran from near Llanelli to Cwm Mawr. Constructed to transport coal from local mines, it also carried passengers until 1953, and there was a station at Pontyates. The line closed in 1996 when the mines ceased operating. However, a group of enthusiasts has already started restoration work on part of the railway, and hope to be operating trains again in the near future http://www.bpgv.co.uk/ .

Dist:0.9km<br/>Almost all of the Gwendraeth Valley Railway now looks as overgrown and abandoned as this, or worse... yet every level crossing still has warning signs that are still maintained and replaced when damaged/vandalised and most still have gates. Incredibly, the rails are still in place along most if not all of its route, though in places this could now be a matter of speculation as where in doubt, they may be buried under subsequent years of growth. At this stage there's a fine line between the current "disused" designation and "abandoned". There is however some hope for at least this stretch of the line - there is an active group of volunteers, based in Pont Yates, who are working to restore a station and a stretch of the line and once again run some of the extraordinary stock that was designed especially to run under some of the low bridges along the route.
