Dist:0.3km north<br/>The Cuckoo Trail is named after the tradition of releasing a Cuckoo at the start of the Heathfield (or Heffle) Fair. The trail runs from Polegate to Heathfield, a distance of 11 miles and runs along the old railway line which closed in 1968. This is the start of the trail which was opened in September 1992.

Dist:0.6km south<br/>This pub was unimaginatively named the "Polegate Inn" but was always know by locals as the Dinkum. In the First World War injured Australian troops were stationed at nearby Willingdon a mile away. Part of their recouperation process was walking across to the pub in Polegate (a great incentive!)and they nicknamed it "The Dinkum". The pub changed it's name in the 1980s and a pub sign showing an injured soldier being helped by a nurse was commissioned from local artist Keith Pettit.

Dist:0.7km south<br/>This station is run by Southern Railway and is seen here from the nearby Level Crossing. This was the site of the original railway station which was built when the railway from Lewes to Hastings was opened in 1846. When the branch to Hailsham was re-routed a new station was opened further east towards Eastbourne. This was closed in the 1980s and is now a restaurant. In 1986 a third station (the one shown here) was built on the site of the first station.
