The substantial stone bridge near Gnosall Heath carries only a farmer's track between fields. The Wellington to Stafford railway was originally built in 1849 by the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company, but eventually closed to passengers and freight in 1964. A long distance footpath, The Way for the Millennium now uses this stretch of the line, and makes a very attractive and secluded route. A report by the Association of Train Operating Companies in 2009 has suggested that this line should be re-opened.

The canal is in yet another of the many cuttings Thomas Telford engineered in order to build his canal as straight as possible with as few locks as possible, thus allowing working boats the least delay possible as they attempted to combat the growing competition from the railways in the mid 1830s when this canal was opened.

Dist:0.2km<br/>A Viking Afloat hire boat approaches in the cutting north-west of Plardiwick Bridge, No 36. The Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal was opened in 1835. It was engineered by Thomas Telford. In order to make the route as straight (and short) as possible with the technology of his time, the canal was built on many embankments, and through many cuttings, some very deep. Merger with competing railways in 1845 resulted in the present name of the Shropshire Union Canal.
