Petworth House is a 17th C mansion set in a 700 Acre Deer park landscaped by Capability Brown. Only the house and a small part of the park is in this grid.

The timber-framed cottage is also to be seen in Les Whitcomb's contribution http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2151192 - a photo taken 60 years earlier. The cottage itself appears to have changed very little, though the lamp-post is new, and the tile-hung building in the foreground has lost its covering of ivy (or Virginia creeper). The view is towards the southern exit from the town, and the Chichester road.

Dist:0.1km<br/>On Pound Street, by the junction of the A285 and A272. A substantial red-brick house of c1790, now used as offices by an antiques company. Grade II* listed. Round the corner can be seen chequered brickwork, much favoured in this area.

Dist:0.1km<br/>For anyone who has been following the lengthy series of Sussex photographs, I will be posting some views of Petworth as a tribute to Leslie Whitcomb, who passed away on 23 October 2010. It was here in Pound Street that his aunts and uncles lived an where he had happy memories.

Dist:0.1km<br/>The house in the centre of the picture is slate-hung on its south-facing side, but tile-hung on the side which faces the street. Tile hanging is commonly seen in Sussex (and parts of Surrey), but slate hanging is fairly rare. The spot from which this shot was taken appears toward the left-hand margin of Les Whitcomb's 1951 view of Pound Street http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2151192 .
