Once a small port exporting stone and china clay this village now attracts tourists and has a large camping and caravan site on the adjacent sands.

The St Austell River has eroded its western bank at this point and exposed three sets of utilities piping.

A mixture of old and new bank repairs are visible at this point: in the foreground, the wooden piles have failed and are slowly rotting away; diagonally opposite, the rectangular profile of gabion baskets, heavily galvanised steel wire cages filled with rocks, indicates a more modern solution with hopefully a much longer life.
