These flats are situated close to Pendleton Shopping Precinct, aka "Salford Shopping City". The flats and precinct were built in the 1960s during the slum clearances. The area used to be known as "Hanky Park" after a local street called Hankinson Street. A newer road here is named Hankinson Way to provide continuity with the past. Some of these high rise buildings have been demolished themselves since, as they provided unsatisfactory accommodation for families and generated as many social problems as they were meant to alleviate. Many that remain have become accommodation blocks for Salford University. The old Hanky Park developed from parkland in the 1800s with the arrival of industry to the area. In the space of a few years thousands of Salfordians crammed into this area of about 7 acres, living in 2 up/2 down terraced houses as families of 10 or more, with communal toilets, and no baths or running water.

This area of Salford was transformed by slum clearance schemes and re-development in the 1960s and 70s. Virtually all that remains of the "old" Salford hereabouts is the spire of Stowell Memorial Church (built to commemorate the life and labour of Canon Hugh Stowell,1799-1865). SJ813980.

Four bronze panels are attached to the lower section of the shaft depicting respectively Oliver Heywood and the arms of Salford and the Heywood family. It was unveiled on 28 October 1893. Oliver Heywood (September 9, 1825 – 1892) was an English banker and philanthropist. Born in Manchester, the son of Benjamin Heywood, and educated at Eton College, Heywood joined the family business, Heywood's Bank in the 1840s. Dist:0.4km<br/>For a year (May 1988- May 1989) a half-way house of trackwork was left in place at the Salford Crescent end of the new Windsor Link. Only one train per hour used the new line toward Manchester Piccadilly during the period and many trains omitted a stop at the new Salford Crescent station, opened in May 1987. A Blackburn-Manchester train tiptoes across the new pointwork en route to Manchester Victoria. It is running along a short bottleneck of single line and will regain the Up Slow Line around the corner. Between Salford Central and here, tracks were temporarily arranged Up Fast/ Down Main/ Up Slow with the former Down Slow taken out of use and the Up Fast completely bypassing Salford Crescent en route to Manchester Victoria only.
