These remains housed an engine built by Robert Stephenson in the early 19c. for pumping water from the coal mines below. Every pump stroke lifted about 195 galls and with one stroke every 10 seconds this removed over 1,500,00 gallons per day.

(Tyneside electric railway services were usurped by DMUs in 1967, prior to the inauguration of the Tyne & Wear Metro in 1980). Byker station closed on 5/4/54 and is now replaced by a Byker station on the Metro opened 14/11/82. The Riverside Line lost its by then exiguous passenger service in 7/73, but goods continued along at least part of the line until 25/9/87.
