Views on what is good and not so good about Scotland's Capital City from Ewan Aitken, Labour Councillor for Craigentinny/Duddingston ward
D K Higgison
I have just recently been shown a copy of the Evening News letters page dated
13th February. My first reaction was of utter frustration and
annoyance all be it coupled with laughter.
I therefore feel compelled, for reasons which will become clear, to write to the Evening News.
In a letter from Keith Anderson, Chief Executive, Port of Leith
Housing Association, Mr Anderson welcomed the £100 million pledged by finance secretary John Swinney. This is for the continued expansion of good
social homes in which people are proud to live.
Ironically to the left hand
side of this page was the “lets get it sorted column”.
May I respectfully ask the finance secretary Mr Swinney, and the Scottish Government not to give this Organization a single penny until they start to adequately maintain their existing housing stock.
As Port of Leith continue to blow their royal trumpet of self congratulating,
back-slapping bull, through their glossy “Portcall” magazine to their tenants and the media alike, let me say this….
For me as one of their tenants, it is a much different experience,
Life is certainly not all rosy in the garden as my landlord would have the
general public believe, and falls far short of the ethos of a reputable housing association.
Since 2009 I have asked relentlessly, that Port of Leith address the following issues:-.
1.The pigeon infestation problem in my roof.Just a few days ago I found yet another maggot ridden specimen in my hall cupboard.
2.If they could replace the “guard” on a dangerously exposed
live light fitting which could cause electric shock or even death to the smallest of prying fingers.
3.And finally any chance they could clean the windows in my stair
which I may add, I pay for monthly, yet apart for the rain they have never seen water for at least three years.
I’ve lost track of most of the reasons given to me for the time lapse in having these repairs completed, one reason was, they were awaiting a spare part, one can only assume it is on its way from China ---by foot …
My last attempt to resolve these problems was made on 20th April this year, and I was assured that the Director of Customer Services would call me. I still await this call.
