The bridge was designed by William Baker, chief engineer of the London and North Western Railway, and was opened in March 1863 at a cost of £87,000.

The bridge across the River Thames was built between 1861 and 1863 for the London & North Western Railway and now carries London Overground trains as well as Southern trains between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction. Behind the bridge the pointed tower is part of the Chelsea Harbour development whilst the chimneys to its right belong to Lots Road Power Station. Built between 1902 and 1904, the power station was the main source of power for the Underground. It was shut down in 1902, since when all power for the Underground has come from the National Grid.

Looking along the West London Line towards Cremorne Bridge over the Thames, with Harbour Yard on the left and Chelsea Crescent beyond, and with Regency House, Chelsea Vista, Harbour Reach, Thames Point and Waterside Tower on the right. The buildings in the far distance are Oyster wharf, on the south bank of the Thames. The West London Line has now received a new lease of life as part of the London Overground network, which has involved the building of new stations, including this one at Imperial Wharf, opened in 2009.
