When that industry declined in the latter half of the century, people were able to find work in the local china clay industry. Although the clay industry is still here, it became increasingly mechanised through the latter half of the 20th century and ceased to be a major employer.

Dist:0.9km<br/>Hewas Water is a hamlet to the west of Sticker. This shot was taken from the bus stop. The road through the hamlet thankfully has little traffic as the main A390 has been moved to a by-pass just north of the hamlet.

Dist:0.9km<br/>This church is now a private dwelling. There are only a few houses nearby but there is a converted schoolhouse. In the 19th century with a number of mines close by, this area was probably a lot more populous than it is now.

Dist:0.9km<br/>This is a mission church, i.e. one that was built to allow people to worship locally as the parish church, St Mewan, is at some distance from the village of Sticker. The church was opened in 1877 and has a regular and dedicated congregation. Inside, the church is plain but with a friendly feel to it. My thanks to the parish priest for allowing me a look inside and for most of the above information. I note that at the time of writing a couple of other websites which purport to show a photograph of this church have misidentified the old church hall as the church itself.

Dist:1.4km east<br/>Situated on Commerce Moor near Five Lanes, to the south-west of the Great Polgooth Mine, South Polgooth was opened for tin in the 1830s. It was last worked, for arsenic, in 1916.

Dist:1.5km east<br/>This enginehouse on the South Polgooth Mine is a well-known landmark on Commerce Moor near Five Lanes. The house is slowly disappearing under the ivy and starting to break up.

Dist:1.5km northwest<br/>A well-known local landmark near Hewas Water, this enginehouse and chimney are all that remains at surface of the Ventonwyn tin mine, last worked in 1903-7. The building housed a 35" cylinder rotative engine to drive stamps.

Dist:1.5km east<br/>This engine house was built in 1880 to contain a pumping engine that apparently also drove stamps. The mine closed in 1882. There was a short reworking in 1916-17 when arsenic was mined. The lodes carried copper, arsenic and Tungsten. This is in a prominent position on high ground.

Dist:1.5km northwest<br/>The engine house of this small mine perched on its hilltop, making it a local landmark that can be seen from miles around. The mine was worked in the 19th century, mainly for tin. In the later years of the 19th century it was incorporated into the Great Dowgas mine and finally closed down in about 1910. The shaft that this engine served was about 350 feet deep. There is a well known contemporary photograph of a group of miners posing in front of the engine house in the late 19th century.
