This station has two platforms. One is no longer in service, the line running to the right of the picture having been converted to use as a mineral line only in the 1950s around the time the picture was taken pretty much abandoned, however restoration work is currently underway. The platform on the left is very much in use today and forms part of the Heart of Wales line from Swansea to Shrewsbury.

Dist:0.1km<br/>This ford is near Pantyffynon and was taken on a crisp frosty morning. A short footbridge is provided up-stream for pedestrians. Despite being a narrow unsurfaced track, it's a viable route on GPS navigation systems.

Dist:0.3km<br/>Pantyffynnon station, being viewed from a short distance down the "Brynamman branch" (closed to public services in 1964). Today, the only passenger service that this station serves is the Heart of Wales service which runs from Swansea to Shrewsbury. The first service of the day can be seen just leaving the station towards Swansea. A previous picture submitted [[20227]] shows the line in the foreground to be quite derelict but work has been conducted to maintain and restore the line in recent times.

Dist:0.3km<br/>After many years of being mothballed, the Amman Valley branch line is currently seeing new life with up to three coal trains a week running up and down to service the open cast mine near Gwaun-Cae-Guerwen. Here we see the train just leaving the Heart of Wales Line next to the Pantyffynnon signal box, which controls the entire length of the Heart of Wales line to Craven Arms and also allows a single train to access the Amman Valley Branch at any time.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This signal box is now the only active box on the Heart of Wales line and controls the entire stretch of line from Llandilo Junction (SS533988) just east of Llanelli to Craven Arms in Shropshire.

Dist:0.3km<br/>This is the location where the river Amman joins the Loughor river. It's always confused me why this is the case as the Amman is quite a bit longer than the Loughor and is also wider at this point.

Dist:0.4km<br/>This abandoned Victorian post box is now disused. It stands on the platform of Pantyffynnon train station.

Dist:0.4km<br/>A semaphore railway signal at Pantyffynnon railway station, part of the Heart Of Wales railways. Semaphore signals are rapidly becoming a rare sight on UK railways, with the electric light signals, which need less maintenance replacing them. A weighted counterbalance can be seen just below the signal itself. This is designed to default to the "stop" signal should the cable controlling the signal break.

Dist:0.4km<br/>Here, the north bound Heart of Wales line train can be seen stopping just short of the station to meet with the signal man. This isn't a social occasion - a physical token is passed to the driver to allow passage between here and Llandeilo, where the line is single track and has no passing places. The signal box controls the entire Heart of Wales line from Llandilo Junction near Llanelli to Craven Arms near Shrewsbury. The junction name takes on the old spelling for Llandeilo.

Dist:0.5km<br/>The signal box is viewed from the end of Pantyffynnon station platform. The Heart of Wales line can be seen running to the right of the picture. The start of the "Brynamman Branch" can be seen in the foreground. This signal box now controls the entire Heart of Wales line from Llandilo Junction (as spelt) to, not shy of Craven Arms.

Dist:0.6km<br/>An unexpected oval bisected by a public right of way. The surface is rubber chips not the stone chippings it appears to be. This is much softer under foot.

Dist:0.7km<br/>Having finished tripping coal on the branch the two 37s arrive back at Pantyffynnon yard to stable for the evening.

Dist:0.8km<br/>The sewage works has been built just down river from the town, across the border in the next borough. Let the county of Swansea deal with it.
