Early pictures of Hillsborough Barracks clearly show 'Arrow Head' railings fixed to the complete length of the front wall. This picture shows that only a short section now remains! Probably the 'missing railings' where removed during WW2, along with lots of others all over the country to be melted down to help the war effort ... but why has this section remained? One theory is that as the wall reduces in height along its length - and it does - then leaving the railings intact was allowed for safety. Any other ideas?

This view shows the rear of the building, which besides having hospital wards for the soldiers also contained Dental Facilities and a section for the Soldier's Wives. This building is now used for business units and shops and still contains many of the original features. [[1103476]]

Some of a number of gravestones mounted in the wall of the Hillsborough Barracks complex. This example is on Langsett Road, near the transport interchange. More examples are through the gates just to the left of this photograph.

This view. of Langsett Road, shows the full front facade of the complex which was originally the Hillsborough Army Barracks but is now preserved and is mostly a shopping centre. From the left you can see an Entrance Tower, the Hospital Building (now used for business units), the Chapel and finally the Main Barracks Building which housed the Officers (and their servants) ... the latter building is now the Head Office for Sheffield Insulations. The tracks and overhead power lines for the Sheffield Supertram can also be seen.

This sign is situated outside the Hillsborough Barracks building on Langsett Road ... there is no actual gate and trams pass through it (as well as buses) ... but you have been warned!

Dist:0.1km<br/>This fabulous building was opened in 1907 as a Club for the Officers from the nearby Hillsborough Barracks ... the other ranks would have used The Queen's Ground just up the road! It has also served as a Boy's Club and currently - as the '393 Club' - it hosts a variety of activities including boxing. The '393' relates to it being 393 Langsett Road!
