There are many such walls in the area. According to Brian Franklin (see http://www.brianfranklin.co.uk/CT Cob Wall Repair.html ) "Cob walls need ‘a good hat and a good pair of boots’. The hat keeps the rain out of the cob. Traditionally this was thatch but slate or tiles were also used. The boots were generally a brick, stone or flint plinth, which acted as a damp-proof course."

Dist:0.2km<br/>According to the History of Over Wallop (see http://www.thewallops.net/OWallop/Village.htm ), a "Window tax" was levied from 1696 to 1851 on houses having more than six windows. According to Hampshire County Council's Historic Buildings Register, this house dates from 1735. The lefthand two windows on the first floor are bricked up.

Dist:0.2km<br/>These farm buildings lodge incongruously in the middle of what seems like a residential village. You might think that this is some kind of agricultural museum. However, locals tell me that it is still a working farm and that a herd of cows is brought down King Lane from the fields every day. There are larger buildings behind and to the right in the picture.

Dist:0.2km<br/>The older houses in Over Wallop are thatched. Some of these overhang the road, as here at Little Thatch, and appropriate precuations have been taken to discourage close-passing vehicles.
